[Noticias] Computer Classes offered

Computer Classes Offered

Classes in Computer Basics and Computer Technology are being offered in Boquete.

These two different courses are intended for: 1) the basic user; and 2) the aspiring tech.

Computer Basics (for the basic user)

This class will concentrate on typical home usage, including home networks and basic
security precautions. Topics covered will be: the computer's 'Desktop,' how to navigate and
search for files, mouse techniques, and various shortcut keys. We'll explore a modern office
suite, including word processor and spreadsheet. We'll learn about the Internet, email and
Internet telephone (VoIP). We'll look at troubleshooting a problem when things go wrong.

Tri-fold “cheat sheets” will be given out to help the student as a post-course memory aid.

This is a 3 hour class with 10 minute breaks. Students are encouraged to bring their laptops.
Windows, Mac, Linux—all OK. Time & place TBA. Class size limits: 4 - 8 students. Price $35.

Computer Technology 101 (for the aspiring tech)
These classes will be technically geared, with the intent to provide a solid foundation for
further study in the computer or engineering fields. Students should be at least twelve (12)
years old and competent at grade eight level math.

These classes will cover both hardware and software.

We'll start by building a virtual computer from scratch. The student will learn the basics of
semiconductor and transistor theory and from this, develop logic gates we'll then combine into
larger circuits that comprise the 'guts' of a computer. Using basic number theory and basic
boolean algebra—which will be taught—we'll design a simple computer including its machine
and assembler languages and the control paths to manipulate data internally.

If there's enough interest, we'll build a personal computer from components we'll order.

For the software component of the class, basics of a modern operating system will be taught.
The student will learn to program at the operating system level using a 'shell' language.

This class will meet for 2 hours once a week at the Starfish Teen-center in Volcancito. Time TBA.
Class size limits: 4 - 8 students. Price $225 for 12 weeks. ($200 if 6 or more students enroll).
Follow-on classes TBA.

If students want to go further, we'll study programming using a compiled programming
language. For this course—a continuation of the above—students should have access to a
functioning computer for the programming activity itself and to demonstrate running programs.
